Fire doors are required in every building except the inside of people’s private accommodations according to the requirements of the relevant national fire safety regulations. It is crucial that fire doors are installed correctly by approved and certified fire installers, and an ongoing maintenance schedule is in place.

The ‘responsible person’ for the building must carry out regular checks on the fire doors and ensure an appropriate maintenance programme is in place, this will form part of the risk assessment. Fire doors should be checked a minimum of every six months.

A 2019 Fire Door Inspection Scheme survey reported that of 100,000 fire doors inspected, 76% were unsuitable.

In the event of a fire, it is critical that exit and entrance points not only provide a safe means of evacuation but are also engineered to provide an effective barrier against the spread of smoke and fire.
